“Smartwatches are a great introduction to the reality of technology and provide kids the freedom that they may be seaking.
“Most parents want their kids to have a way to safely communicate that doesn't involve the fears and freedoms of a phone,” says Heather Mahalik, Senior Director of Digital Intelligence at Cellebrite and SANS Faculty Fellow Instructor. However, when you’re in the market for a smartwatch, it’s also important to look for features the watch does not allow, like social media, incoming calls from unknown people, or access to the internet. With features like GPS tracking so you know when your child has hopped off the bus, to interfaces that are easy for kids to navigate, and batteries that stay charged all day long, there’s plenty of features that make smartwatches appealing to both parents and kids. If you’re not ready to hand over a cellphone to your kids, but still want a way to stay connected with them, a smartwatch that’s designed specifically for kids is a great option.
